This just came from a Network Now update from the NFL Network. This can mean only one thing, obviously. Mike Shanahan will be the next coach of the Washington Redskins. Apparently, he just got off the plane.
The Redskins fired Jim Zorn earlier today, as expected. Looks like we'll finally have a real GM and a tough coach together at the same time.
4:12 pm UPDATE
Adam Schefter reports on ESPN, Shanahan was flown in on Daniel Snyder's personal plane to Dulles International, and was whisked away in a limosuine to Redskins Park in Ashburn, VA.

BREAKING: Rush Limbaugh Taken to Hospital (Updated)
Happened earlier today in Hawaii after a golf outing. Apparently, Rush was complaining of chest pains. Thoughts and prayers are with him and his family at this time.
Updates as they come in.
UPDATES
- Rush is apparently resting comfortably after being admitted to the hospital. Reports state that his chest pains may have been a side effect of medication he has been taking for back problems.
- Apparently, some on the left have been respectful, but others cannot hide their vitrol and hate for Rush.

Another D.C.-Area Icon Passes...
George Michael (the sportscaster, not the singer) passed away this morning at the age of 70 after his battle with cancer.
He was the man who gave us "George Michael's Sports Machine" late on Sunday nights, which was the forerunner to SportsCenter. He was a mainstay on NBC 4, and host of Redskins Report for many, many years. George brought a level of energy and enthusiasm that was combined with perfect timing, a very distinct voice, and credible reporting.
I remember when I was little, when cable was in it's more primitive stages and Pay-Per-View was not an option for us with so few funds, I would stay up late on the nights of Pro Wrestling PPV's, and wait for George to give the results and clips from the show.
When I think back to growing up in the glory days of the Redskins in the 80's and early 90's, two voices ring loudly to me...Frank Herzog's play-by-play (Touchdown! Washington Redskins!...so iconic), and George Michael hosting Redskins Report and interviewing players during the week on the 5 and 6 o'clock news.
My thoughts and prayers go out to George's family and friends. He will be truly missed by all of us who grew up in the D.C. area.

BREAKING NEWS: Actress Brittany Murphy Dead at 32
Apparently, she suffered full cardiac arrest this morning.
Murphy was one of those actresses who managed to put together a prolific career without many "starring" roles. She always played a second or third major role very well.
She was great as the voice of Luanne and young Joseph on King of the Hill. Her performance in 8 Mile was excellent. She also had strong performances in such movies as Clueless (her first big break), Sin City, Girl, Interrupted, and Don't Say a Word. She collaborated with legendary DJ Paul Oakenfold on the number one Billboard Dance Club hit, "Faster Kill Pussycat".
I was not aware that she had health issues. It will be very interesting to see what brought this on, as I've never heard of her having any kind of health problems.
UPDATE
While I'm not the biggest fan of "celeb gossip" sites, TMZ usually has good scoops on these things and you can track their updates here.

Author Michael Crichton Dead at 66...
Sad news for millions, author Michael Crichton is dead at the age of 66 after a long battle with cancer.
Crichton was a PhD, an author whose books have entertained millions and have often been translated into movie form, and a leading critic of the global warming movement.
In fact, his criticism (which, given his PhD, lends him some credibility) has frustrated Al Gore on many occasions, especially when he issued a series of challenges to Gore to debate the topic, but the former VP refused.
Crichton was the author of such books as Jurassic Park, The Andromeda Strain, Sphere, Congo, The Great Train Robbery, The Terminal Man, Westworld, State of Fear, and Disclosure. He was also the brainchild behind the TV show ER, co-wrote the screenplay for the movie Twister, and also co-wrote the screenplays for a number of the movies that were made from his own books.
Crichton's works are best known for challenging the idea of "fail-safe" measures and the idea that so-called "perfect" and "infalliable" systems will inevitably fail at some point, no matter how hard you try to achieve perfection.

BREAKING: Benazir Bhutto Assassinated, UPDATE: Al-Qaeda Leader Admits They Were Behind It
Former Prime Minister of Pakistan, and the first female leader of a Muslim nation, Benazir Bhutto was killed this morning in an attack by a suicide bomber.
Bhutto was shot in the neck and chest by the bomber, seconds later the bomber blew himself up and killed 20 others in the process. This attack comes with only a little over a week before the January 8th Parliamentary elections in Pakistan, where Bhutto's Pakistan People's Party was expected to do well because of their wide base of support throughout the country.
This bloody massacre is the latest in a string of events that has left Pakistan teetering on the brink of chaos and anarchy. Pakistan is a key ally of the United States in the Global War on Terror, especially in neighboring Afghanistan, and a nuclear weapon-possessing country.
This event will have global repercussions, as Bhutto was a key figure in the Muslim world and this will surely upset those who supported her and galvanize those who opposed her.
UPDATES...
- Minutes after Bhutto was announced dead, Bhutto supporters at the hospital erupted in anger and changed "Killer, Killer, Musharraf" in reference to Bhutto's political opponent, Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf.
- The last photo taken of Bhutto before her death.
- There was also another attempted attack today against another anti-Musharraf leader, Nawaz Sharif, that was thwarted by police. Also revealed in this article is the fact that Islamic militants have had it out for Bhutto, due to her support for women's rights, secular politics, and the American war on terror.
- State Department, President Bush both condemn the slaying of Bhutto.
- Live coverage on Sky News. The scene can only be described as mass anger and violence.
- Some blog reactions, courtesy of the Times Online. Also, a list of the main suspects who could be behind this.
- Reactions from 2008 Presidential hopefuls.
- AP: Musharraf administration states Al-Qaeda is behind attacks. Musharraf also makes a plea for peace in the nation.
- Al-Qaeda commander Mustafa Abu Al-Yazid claims that they indeed were behind this attack.
- D.J. McGuire has an excellent analysis regarding Bhutto's assassination, how things got to this point, and what it means for Pakistan in the future.

Two-Alarm Fire at Eisenhower Executive Building
Actually, it was in Dick Cheney's suite of offices.
Quick response from the DC Fire Department (the world's finest) limited this fire to smoke and water damage in Cheney's offices, and kept the fire from spreading to other offices. The only injury was to a U.S. Marine stationed at the offices, who had to break a window on the 5th floor of the building to escape and cut his hand in the process. He was rescued from the building's ledge.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Chemical Explosion at Fox News
There has apparently been a chemical explosion at the headquarters of Fox News (which is inside the headquarters of it's parent company, News Corp) in New York City. One man has been confirmed to be injured from chemical burns, and 700 people were evacuated. Fortunately, no other injuries have been reported.
So far, this has surprisingly not had an effect on Fox News broadcasting, and the channel is still up and running (probably from it's D.C. studios).

UPDATE: Apparently, it wasn't a major explosion, but was enough to evacuate floors 42 through 45 of News Corp's headquarters. Still, a scary situation, I'm sure.
